Intraparallel is a transdisciplinary advisory and research studio built on the premise that every system is a product of its externalities. Policy, economics, technology, geography, conflict: these do not exist in isolation, and the studio treats them accordingly. Negative capability sits at the center of the practice, holding complexity open rather than collapsing it into premature resolution, because the structure of a problem only reveals itself under sustained investigation. The studio is led by Caden Dixon.
The work moves through fluid intelligence and System 2 analysis. Census tables become spatial narratives. Trade flows become interactive systems. Economic indicators become instruments that surface structural patterns otherwise buried in raw numbers. Geospatial research, data visualization, interactive cartography, human-computer interaction, computational design, and full-stack engineering converge not as separate services but as a single investigative apparatus applied to problems of sufficient depth. The distance between a consequential dataset and genuine comprehension is a design problem, and the most consequential datasets are almost always the least accessible.

The process is research-driven, computationally intensive, and built to scale, from single-page D3 visualizations to full geospatial pipelines processing millions of census blocks. Collaborators enter as full technical partners, embedded in research workflows from the earliest possible stage. Depending on scope, the studio draws on a network of engineers, cartographers, and domain specialists. Every engagement begins from the problem’s own logic, follows its externalities across whatever disciplinary boundaries they cross, and produces solutions that did not previously exist in the problem space.

Downtown Core & Neighborhood Commercial DBSCAN-delineated employment districts — downtown cores and neighborhood commercial clusters at the block level.
To define Massachusetts downtowns algorithmically, we built a Downtown Job Mix Index (DJMI) that scores each census block on employment composition and density. Using LODES workplace data, we isolated downtown-compatible sectors—retail, finance, professional services, food service, public admin—while filtering out hospitals and warehouses that inflate job counts without downtown character. The DJMI formula combines downtown employment share with log-density to capture spatial concentration without over-weighting outliers.
